The BUZZ

Don King - The Big Show 2-6pm

Don grew up in Drumright (1 hour west of Tulsa), attended Kemper Military School, and says he became a play-by-play guy:
“When my blind sister and I attended a TU – Louisville basketball game at the Fairgrounds in the early ‘60’s. She always carried a transistor radio with her to hear Len Morton (TU Announcer) describe the action. This particular game found her batteries dead so I had to explain everything to her. She then remarked as we were leaving that I did a good enough job to become a sports announcer some day. That’s when the light came on in 1964 at the age of 11.”
Don graduated from OSU in 1976 with a degree in Radio/Television. He has broadcast events for Cox Cable Television since 1988 and has been the lead announcer on over 600 sporting events, including 35 state championship events from football, basketball, baseball, swimming, soccer, and wrestling. Don has also broadcast on radio and television for the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane including the Western Athletic Conference tournament the past three seasons. He has won numerous awards including the latest this past summer when he was honored by the Oklahoma High School Athletic directors for his 25 years of media service to high schools around the state.
His on-air persona is conversational, informative, and somewhat entertaining, with a focus:
"To inform the listener and remind on-air people that listeners do not listen to our shows every minute and a few are casual sports fans, not fanatics like those on the air."
Don’s favorite sports moment as a fan was when he attended the ’85 World Series between the Cardinals and the Royals. (Even though the wrong team lost.) His best working moment was producing a pay-per-view special for HBO through Tulsa Cable on the Marvin Hagler-Sugar Ray Leonard fight in Las Vegas, then attending the fight while hanging with the stars like Bo Derek, Angelo Dundee, and others.
Don is currently single, with two boys; Evan (19) in college in Ohio, and Jared (16) who attends Jenks as a junior.
